Bollywood should come to Brazil, says director

Toronto, Bollywood movies should come to Brazil “in a big way”, says veteran Brazilian filmmaker Suzana Amaral, describing herself as a fan of Hindi movies from the 1970s.

“Our two great nations should start forging deeper cultural ties. I want Bollywood to come Brazil in a big way. Their films are gorgeous and we can learn a lot from them,” the 77-year-old said in an interview here.

Amaral’s movie “Hotel Altantico” was premiered last week at the Toronto International Film Festival. She was probably the oldest film director at the festival.

“I used to watch every Bollywood film when I was studying film direction at New York University in the mid-1970s. There used to be a theatre on 56th Street which screened only Bollywood films. I never missed one,” the Rio de Janeiro-based filmmaker told IANS.

“India and Brazil are the next superpowers. Future belongs to us. We used to be called underdeveloped, but not any more.”

She added that she would love to have her films screened at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, a former Portuguese enclave.

A veteran of 56 films, she won the Silver Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1986 for her film “The Hour of the Star”.

Amaral praises Indian audiences for supporting the Indian film industry.

“I salute Bollywood and Indian audiences for supporting their film industry. That’s why it is the biggest in terms of number of films produced each year while we in Brazil produce only about 80 films.”

Amaral has been invited to a film festival in Kerala in December. But she said she would not be able attend because of family commitments.

“I have nine children, and (they have) large families. I have to be with them for Christmas, though I am not Christian. But I look forward being in India some time later.”

A practising Buddhist, she said she would love to interact not only with Bollywood directors while in India but also the Dalai Lama.

“How far is Dharamshala from the Indian capital? I would love to see the Dalai Lama when I am there,” she said, referring to the Indian hill town where the Tibetan spiritual leader is based. “I meditate daily and live by Buddhism principles.”

Her film “Hotel Atlantico” is a manifestation of her Buddhist beliefs. In the film, an unnamed character – played by upcoming star Julio Andrade – wanders through life without any destination, allowing fate to decide his course.

“For me this film is semi-autobiographical. Being a Buddhist, I take life as it comes, so does the protagonist of this film. I live in the present moment. I don’t bother about what will happen next or what happened in the past,” she said.

In between, Amaral has thrown in a lot of humour and sexuality in the film. “Hotel Atlantico”, well received in Toronto, opens in Brazil in November.

Actress Asin Thottumkal hospitalised

Mumbai, Actress Asin Thottumkal, who’s lately been working round-the-clock, has been admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital here following an acute sinus condition.

The “Ghajini” fame actress was admitted Monday morning. She was taken to Kokilaben hospital because it’s close to her home in Andheri.

Though the actress herself was unavailable for comment, her father, who was with her in the hospital, told IANS: “Yes she’s in hospital. Nothing to worry about. All this is part of the process of my daughter’s growing up.”

Asin is expected to be out after treatment in a couple of days. But the news of her hospitalisation on Eid was being whispered behind closed doors. Some said she was admitted after suffering from acute exhaustion.

“Asin was admitted to the Dhirubhai hospital… not for exhaustion but an acute sinus condition. She had been neglecting the condition for quite some time now. But now the sinus situation had to be attended to. But she was in great spirits, her usual chirpy and friendly self singing even as her treatment was being done,” said a source close to Asin.

Her condition got aggravated because of the night shooting for “London Dreams”.

“She had no choice but to get into the hospital to have the condition treated. She waited until Eid when there was break from work,” said the source.

Dismissing reports of Chinese air incursions along the Line of Actual Control, Air Chief Marshal P V Naik today said the existing IAF aircraft strength was inadequate, just one-third the size of China’s, and it needed to make more acquisitions to enhance its capability.

“As far as Air Force is concerned, there are no incursions anywhere,” Naik told reporters at the South Western Air Command (SWAC) headquarters in Gandhinagar. “Our present aircraft strength is inadequate. We have one-third of the Chinese numbers. And that is why we are going for more.”

Earlier, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, before he retired as Navy chief, had said that India had neither the capability nor the intention to match China force for force.

Replying to a query on what really constituted the biggest threat to India, Naik said: “You know what happened to George Fernandes and a former Indian Naval chief when they described China as a threat.

Wife waits in camp, Major killed in J&K encounter

On October 5, Major J S Suri would have turned 30. He had planned to celebrate his birthday with his wife, S Pallavi, by the picturesque Manasbal lake where his 13 Rashtriya Rifles unit is deployed. Pallavi arrived at the 13 RR regimental centre in Manasbal a few days ago.

On Wednesday, Major Suri was killed in a major encounter with militants in Bandipore in North Kashmir. Pallavi is in shock. They were married only last year.

“She seemed to have guessed last night that something was wrong... confusing reports about Maj. Suri were coming in from the encounter site,” said an Army officer who was part of the 45-hour operation to flush out the militants holed up on an island on Wular lake.

“She is in a state of shock. Officers and jawans of the unit are trying to console her. It was very difficult for senior officers to break the news to her that Maj. Suri had sacrificed his life for the nation.”

Four Armymen — Maj. Suri and three jawans — were killed after security forces engaged two groups of militants in separate encounters over two days in Bandipore and Rafiabad.

Four militants were killed, including two top commanders — Abu Pasha of the Hizbul Mujahideen and Abu Moosa of the Laskhar-e-Toiba. Both were foreigners active in Bandipore for the last eight years. They were killed in the same encounter in which Maj. Suri died.

World will need 70pc more food in 2050

Rome—World food production must increase by 70 percent by 2050, to nourish a human population then likely to be 9.1 billion, the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation forecast Wednesday.

“FAO is cautiously optimistic about the world’s potential to feed itself by 2050,” said FAO Assistant Director-General Hafez Ghanem. However, he stressed that feeding everyone in the world by then “will not be automatic and several significant challenges have to be met.”

The agency is preparing for a high-level expert forum in Rome on October 12-13 on “How to Feed the World in 2050” and plans to gather 300 specialists from academic, non-governmental and private sector institutions.

This forum will pave the way for a World Summit on Food Security in Rome on November 16-18. The world population is expected to grow from 6.8 billion today to 9.1 billion in 2050, according to the latest UN forecast. “Nearly all of the population growth will occur in developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is expected to grow the fastest (up 108 percent, 910 million people), and East and South East Asia’s the slowest (up 11 percent, 228 million).

“Around 70 percent of the world population will live in cities or urban areas by 2050, up from 49 percent today,” the document said. The demand for food is expected to grow as a result of rising incomes as well as population growth, the discussion paper added. Cereal production will have to increase by almost a billion tonnes from 2.1 billion today and meat production will have to grow by more than 200 million tonnes to reach a total of 470 million tonnes in 2050.

The FAO estimated that the “production of biofuels could also increase the demand for agricultural commodities, depending on energy prices and government policies.” More land will be needed for crops “despite the fact that 90 percent of the growth in crop production is projected to come from higher yields and increased cropping intensity.”

The FAO estimated that “arable land will have to expand by around 120 million hectares in developing countries,” mainly in Africa and Latin America, while “arable land in use in developed countries is expected to decline by some 50 million hectares, although this could be changed by the demand for biofuels.”—AFP

Terrorism will be the single most important issue for discussion between External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart during their meeting in New York on Sunday.

"Terrorism is the single most important issue from our side," Krishna said ahead of his meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the United Nation General Assembly.

India has been demanding action against the perpetrators of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and dismantling of terror infrastructure in Pakistani soil.

Krishna also said New Delhi was assessing Islamabad's recent response to its demands related to the Mumbai attacks.

"We are evaluating the various steps that Pakistan seems to have taken with respect to Mumbai attacks," he said.

Pakistan has arrested seven people and sent out an alert for 11 more in connection with the attacks.

Chandrayaan-1 finds evidence of water on moon

India's maiden moon mission Chandrayaan-I has detected evidence of water across the lunar surface, scientists announced on Thursday.

Moon Mineralogy Mapper, a NASA instrument onboard Chandrayaan-I, detected wavelengths of reflected light that would indicate a chemical bond between hydrogen and oxygen in materials on the thin layer of upper soil.

The Moon Mineralogy Mapper or M3 has confirmed existence of water on moon by analysing the data collected from Chandrayaan-I.

The finding ends four-decade long speculation on whether there is water on moon.

Scientists first claimed that water existed on moon about 40 years ago after they analysed rock samples brought to earth as souvenirs by Apollo astronauts.

But they had doubts about the findings as the boxes in which the moon rocks were brought to earth had leaked contaminating the samples with air from the atmosphere.

Scientists believe that the water could have been formed due to interaction of oxygen present in rocks and soil on moon with hydrogen in the form of protons emitted by the sun as a result of nuclear fusion.

As these protons hit the moon, they break apart oxygen bonds in soil materials, and where free oxygen and hydrogen are together, there's a high chance that trace amounts of water will be formed, said Larry Taylor from the University of Tennessee, who was among the M3 team of scientists.

The M3 instrument analysed how sunlight reflected off the lunar surface to identify water particles in which scientists observed elements of chemical bonding alike water.

As Veera Kaur a.k.a Veer Pratap Singh landed in Pune, it was without her trademark willow bat or her bright Patiala shalwars. Dressed in a simple black dress, with minimal make-up and straight hair, Rani was the epitome of calm and quite unlike her boisterous screen persona. “It took me six months to learn to play cricket well enough to portray my role onscreen. When I started out, I did not even know the basics of the game. But at the end of shooting, I could play like a pro,” says the vibrant Rani, surrounded by a posse of media persons at the newly-opened Fame Multiplex in Fatima Nagar.

“I dressed in those bright outfits as Veera Kaur, since all Punjabi women are so full of life. And in this film, I got to play both a pretty girl and a young Sikh lad, all agog about playing cricket. I truly had the best of both worlds,” says the 31-year-old actress, who looks not a year older than 25, in her new, chic avatar. When asked what was more challenging for her, playing a boy or a cricketer, in ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’, she says, “It’s amazing how nobody has homed onto the fact that I’ve played cricket like a pro, in the film. I mean, critics are commenting on everything in the film, except my cricket. I guess it means that my cricket shots appear natural and effortless and I take that as a compliment.”

Goonja sa hai koi iktaara iktaara. This score from Karan Johar’s latest offering 'Wake Up Sid' is fast climbing the charts, thrusting singer Kavita Seth, a sufi ghazal singer from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Delhi, into instant limelight.

“I want to revel in the glory,” says Seth, 38, who began her career with radio two decades ago in Bareilly. Director Satish Kaushik spotted her four years ago at a concert in Delhi and offered her a Sufi track called Maula in his film Vaada. This was followed by Mujhe mat roko in Gangster and a few sufi ghazal albums. Among those who heard her ghazal album was Amit Trivedi, music composer of Iktaara. “Singers and their albums have a smaller shelf life, so we need something that can remain with the audience for long. I needed something like Iktaara to get noticed properly,” says Seth, adding that she hopes Wake Up Sid gets a positive response when it releases on October 2 .

Her powerful voice and unique style come from listening to local performers at the dargahs of Bareilly. “My father used to take me to the mazaars, where the songs in the praise of Bulleshah and Waarisshah wrapped me in their mysticism. I started singing like the dargah singers, in a loud and open voice, lost to the world,” says Seth who later moved to Delhi to study music. Festivals like Chandni Chowk Utsav and Muzaffar Ali’s Jahan-E-Khusro festival were her platforms; she also joined a sufi music group in Delhi called Karwaan.

Seth has also composed and sung three songs for N Chandra’s latest venture Yeh Mera India. “I haven’t heard any of these being played on TV or radio. Iktaara is under Dharma Productions which is promoting the song effectively,” she says.

Things are looking up but Seth says she is far from smug. “There is a long way to go and I have to work even harder to sing better,” she says. With Iktaara, she’s just raised the bar for herself.

After a string of multi-starrer comedies, like Masti, Kya Kool Hain Hum and Dhamaal, Riteish Deshmukh has found himself a niche in the genre. He’s currently awaiting his next release, ‘Do Knot Disturb’, which he believes is going to be an absolute laugh riot. “David Dhawan is the biggest director I have worked with until now. It was an amazing experience on the sets everyday. When you have the duo of David and Govinda, everyone knows that a super comedy is on the charts.”

‘Do Knot Disturb’ will see Dhawan and Govinda come back together after two years — their last was Partner in 2007. “Everybody knows that both of them work great together.

The best part is that even though they are such great friends, not once did they make me or other actors feel left out,” Deshmukh admits.

Even though the 30-year-old actor has already established himself in the genre, he believes that when working with such senior actors, one is bound to learn. “It’s easy to make someone laugh on a punch line, but Govinda can make you laugh even on a serious dialogue,” he says with a smile, adding, “There’s so much I took back merely by observing.”

Though popular on the dance floor, the actor says he is humbled by Govinda’s dancing skills and admits that as a teenager, he used to shut his rooms door, wear tall boots and dance to all his numbers. “The best part about Govinda is that he can dance with his face — you can picturise an entire song with him only waist up and it’ll be great,” he says.

Even though he has excelled in comedy, the next few films will see Deshmukh moving away from the genre. ‘Aladin’ will see him play a loser and the protagonist who has no interest in owning a genie. After that we will see him in a completely serious role in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rann’. “I play an investigative television journalist in this film. Here you will see me clearly moving away from the genre that has come to be associated with me,” he reveals.

After that comes his solo romantic flick Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hain, opposite his co-star from Aladin, Jaqueline Fernandes. “In this one, I play a typical romantic hero but the storyline is very interesting. It’s about a girl from Venus who comes to Earth and falls in love with an Earthling. It’s a very sweet love story and I’m looking forward to this release early next year.”

So is this a deliberate move away from comedy? “See I didn’t want to get stuck in one place. Actors will always be offered what they are good at. There was a stage when I was offered a lot of comedies. Right now I’m just glad that I’ve got the chance to be part of films that give me the chance to play a much more serious role,” Deshmukh admits. And we’re glad to be able to see more of this actor on the big screen.

“There were talks with Shilpa for the same but things are yet to be finalised. If she agrees, it’s going to be dhamaka to see Shilpa, Archana and Shekhar on the panel of judges where the contestants will make them laugh with their humour,” chirps the little birdie.

Anubhav Sinha (Dus, Cash) directed action thriller Ra.1 rather than going in for Farah Khan’s Happy New Year after he completes My Name Is Khan. Both Ra.1 and Happy New Year are being made under the King Khan’s home banner Red Chillies Entertainment.

A source reveals, “SRK was earlier in two minds whether to go on floors first with Farah’s film or Anubhav Sinha’s. But apparently he has made up his mind to do the action adventure movie Ra.1, which has a superhero backdrop. It will begin shooting from early next year and will be extensively shot on foreign locations. Shah Rukh has already begun preparing for the role by working out on his physique and is again aiming to acquire 6-pack abs. He was also recently quoted stating, “I want to put on my tights and my kids blanket on my back. I want to do this film for my children. I’ve always wanted to make a superhero film, but I never had six-pack abs. Now that I have them, I want to do this. It’s not an animation film, as many people believe; I would like to clarify that. It’s a live action film.”

"For me, it's not just the matter of Jacqueline showing immense confidence in her first ever movie, but the fact that she has very good screen presence and her look can be tweaked around being Indian or Western as per the demand of the situation," he explains, "For me, that's her biggest selling point."

Australian-educated Jacqueline is very excited by her debut movie Aladin. Amitabh Bachchan Acts 12 Years Old!

Well, actually screen legend Amitabh Bachchan is 66 years old but in his film Pa, Amitabh plays a twelve year old with a condition called Progeria. Progeria, according to the Progeria Research Foundation is a "rare, fatal genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children."

At the helm of this intriguing project is R Balkrishnan aka Balki, who directed Big B in Cheeni Kum. In an earlier interview Balki said, "Pa would be a far more emotional story than Cheeni Kum. Big B plays a character he has never played before. It’s a very emotional father-son story. But the emotions won’t be melodramatic." If the story was not intriguing enough - if Big B is playing the son, who is playing the father? It is Abhishek Bachchan, who is playing daddy to his daddy, and Vidya Balan is cast as his mom.

Another interesting twist to this incredibly fascinating project is that in the credits Amitabh will be introduced as if it was his first film. Balki told Subhash K Jha, "The credits will read 'Starring Abhishek Bachchan ... Vidya Balan ... Introducing Amitabh Bachchan.' I truly believe this is Mr Bachchan's first film, because he has never played a 12-year-old. His character is named Auro ... No, it's not short for Aurobindo. He's just ... Auro. And if there are any members of the audience who haven't seen him before, they won't recognise him at all in the film."

It seems that in order to get into character for Auro, it not only took 6 hours of make up, it also saw Mr. Bachchan taking on the persona of a child - so much so that at some points he had to be disciplined, "Mr Bachchan behaved like a 10-year-old on the sets. He just allowed the child within him to surface to become Auro. He threw so many tantrums just like an uncontrollable child that we had to literally discipline him at times. On the sets, he would also stomp his feet like a brat and just go on whining, 'I want ... I want ... I want!' until he got what he wanted. We were frightened by the level he had imbibed his character."

The director added, "No matter how prepared you are as a filmmaker to work with this all-pervasive idol of an actor, you are still taken aback by what he does to his character."

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who is currently in London, is missing non-vegetarian delicacies, especially seafood, since she is maintaining a pure vegetarian diet for nine days as part of the ongoing Navratri celebrations.

"This is the only time in the year that I turn vegetarian for the whole nine days and fast on the last (day). It's difficult, especially since I travel so much and to top it all I love sea food," Shilpa posted on her blog www.shilpashettylive.com/blog/.

In London after a "fun" holiday in the Maldives, Shilpa is currently busy working on her food and beverage project, Gourmet Creations. She has invested in it with fiance Raj Kundra.

The actress has teamed up with Andy Varma, celebrity chef and head of the wholesale division and business development of the V8 Gourmet group, to bring out ready meals, pickles and chutneys.

"The curry project would be out by end of this year," she confirmed.

Lately, Shilpa has been able to do a lot of other things after the shooting of "The Man" has been delayed. While Sunny Deol plays male lead, Shilpa will be seen as his love interest in the action thriller.

"(I'm) reading scripts for my home production, and working on my Ghatkopar center for my Medispa. (I'm also) thrilled to announce the opening of IOSIS Medispa in Jalandhar," she added.

New Delhi: Known for their edgy and racy background scores in ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Chak De! India’ and ‘Krrish’, music composers Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are now looking forward to their next creation "Kites", which they promise matches international standards."We are eagerly waiting and looking forward to the release of the film `Kites` where we have worked on the background score. We have given our best and all I can say is that it truly matches international standards," Sulaiman told reporters over phone from Mumbai.The composer, however, refused to divulge more details about the score.

‘Kites’, which is expected to release January next year, is directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Rakesh Roshan. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Mexican actress Barbara Mori and Kangana Ranaut. Set in Las Vegas, it is said to be a romantic thriller that revolves around a Salsa dance teacher, played by Hrithik.

Salim-Sulaiman, who have been in the industry for over a decade now, started out with background scores and graduated to composing songs. They have given chartbusters for successful movies like "Fashion", "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" and "Chak De! India" among others.

They might be successfully juggling between both jobs, but what remains their first love?

"Definitely background score. It is an art that we are perfecting. It`s a very challenging job and we are trying to master it," said Sulaiman.

"But it`s true that music direction brings you recognition. We have to agree that India is a song and dance nation and the main focus has always been on songs in a film," he added.

At the same time, the composer is happy that people are now slowly realising the need of having a good background score in a film.

"Now a lot of people are understanding the importance of background score. Today, we have directors who call us to book our dates three months in advance for their projects. It feels nice," said Sulaiman.

Apart from "Kites", the composers have various big budget films in their kitty including "Teen Patti", "Pyaar Impossible" and "Kurbaan"

TAJ CITY : Live cartridges and terrerists are found in TAJ CITY

Agra: Over 200 live cartridges were recovered from near the Agra Fort in this city of the Taj in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was conducting repair works at the site where the cartridges were found.

The cartridges were buried in a sack and were recovered on Tuesday when labourers were digging at a spot near the wall of the fort.

"They (cartridges) are mostly of AK-47 rifles and it appears that they were buried here for long. The matter is being probed," Deputy Inspector General of Police (Agra) Brij Bhushan told a news service.

However, police sources have said that two people have been arrested for questioning and initial investigations have revealed that the cartridges were to be supplied to criminals.

Rajiv Gandhi's assassin Nalini breaks her fast

Nalini Sriharan broke her two-day-old fast on Wednesday morning after jail authorities assured her that they would form an advisory board next month to consider her plea for premature release.

The woman convicted for assassinating former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, began her hunger strike at the Vellore jail in Tamil Nadu on Monday, saying that after over 18 years in prison, she deserved to be free.

On Tuesday morning, her mother had been denied permission to meet her.

Nalini has served 18-and-a- half years in jail in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Her death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment at Sonia Gandhi's request after Nalini gave birth to a little girl, Meghara, inside jail. Sonia Gandhi pleaded that she didn't want Meghara to be orphaned.

In 2007, Nalini asked the Madras High Court to release her from jail on the grounds of good conduct. An advisory board rejected this proposal. The court ordered the Tamil Nadu government to then set up another advisory board to consider Nalini's petition. This new board is yet to be formed.

Hope for Nalini's early release brightened after Priyanka Gandhi secretly met her last year. Priyanka, who was a teenager when her father was killed, told NDTV that she had forgiven her father's killer.

Nalini has approached the Madras High Court yet again, with this plea: "I would like to settle down peacefully... I am already 43. Due to my health condition after 18 years in jail, I cannot expect to live long.''

Meanwhile, the Congress has said it is for the Tamil Nadu government and the courts to decide over the matter. But the DMK has said that it's something for the Centre to decide

Jackson mother granted estate say

Michael Jackson's mother can challenge the administrators of his estate without losing her share in a family trust, a Los Angeles judge has ruled.

Katherine Jackson's lawyers had said she wanted more say in the estate even though Jackson's will contained a "no contest" clause to the family trust.

The singer appointed his long-time lawyer John Branca and music executive John McClain as executors.

The family trust gives Mrs Jackson more than $1m (£606,000) a year.

The money from the estate is to be used to support herself and her son's three children.

The amount was approved by a judge in Los Angeles in August. Michael Jackson's estate is estimated to be worth $400m (£246m).

Judge Mitchell Beckloff ruled on Friday that Katherine Jackson would not violate the "no contest" clause if she were to challenge decisions of the estate's administrators.

Court cases

Michael Jackson is thought to have left about $400m (£246m) in debt when he died in June but his assets are estimated to outweigh considerably his debts.

The singer had partial ownership of the Sony/ATV music catalogue and many Beatles songs.

The singer's three children also receive a monthly allowance of $60,000 (£37,000). Various charities also benefit.

After his death, Michael Jackson's children went to live with their grandmother at the family home in north Los Angeles.

They are still living there and Katherine Jackson has been granted permanent guardianship.

Judge Beckloff has been presiding over a string of court cases regarding the unravelling of Michael Jackson's estate, his business dealings and the wrangling over future earnings.

There are plans to produce a wide range of Michael Jackson memorabilia and a movie including footage from rehearsals for his planned comeback tour will be released in late October.

Branca and McClain have said they expect the merchandising to have boosted the late singer's estate by $200m (£123m) by the end of 2009.

Michael Jackson died from high levels of drugs in his body including the powerful anaesthetic propofol, more commonly used on hospital patients before surgery.

A police investigation into how he procured the drug has focussed on his personal physician Dr Conrad Murray. No charges have yet been brought in relation to the singer's death.

BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu might be a frequent sight on television, but the Congress claims he is never to be seen in his constituency Amritsar. The party has declared him 'missing'.

Congress activists have put up posters in Amritsar, claiming that the cricketer-turned-politician was missing ever since he won the Lok Sabha elections. The posters have been put up outside government buildings and at prominent places.

The party has even filed a police complaint. "We have lodged a police complaint that Sidhu has been missing for a long time. Whoever finds him will be suitably rewarded," said Rajkumar, Congress MLA.

But the BJP has brushed aside the Congress's claims as a political gimmick. "The Congress is jealous of Sidhu as he is the star campaigner of the BJP. The Congress does not have any leader of Sidhu's stature in Punjab," said Col Amreek Singh, BJP leader.

Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a bid to explain his controversial "cattle class" remark on Twitter.

Sources said Tharoor arrived at 10 Janpath and spent around 15 minutes with Sonia. He is reported to have explained to Sonia the circumstances under which he made the remarks and the words he used.

"Absolutely, in cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows," Tharoor had written on Twitter, immediately inviting flak from the Congress and demands from partymen for his resignation.

Although Tharoor apologised for his remarks last week, the controversy refused to die down. His comments were seen as a dig on the Congress's austerity drive, under which Sonia flew by economy class to Mumbai and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi opted for A/C chair car train travel to Ludhiana.

After meeting Sonia, Tharoor was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had last week played down the minister's remarks as a "joke".

Preity Zinta, who is doing a dance number Happening for the film Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, has said to have put a lot of effort in to the song.

But she hates it when people refer to the dance number as an item song. Well, she has a 'valid' reason for that. She claims that the song has been picturised aesthetically and is actually a fun song.

"So, it's not a good idea to call it an item song even before the film has released," she said.

Even director Prem Soni is not happy that people have started calling it an item number. He has been trying hard to clarify it to everyone that it is not an item number.

"Preity is a senior actress and a star. She has never done something like this. It's only because of her friendship with Salman that she agreed to do a fun, dance number. It would be wrong to call the song an item number," says Soni.

The director insists the actress plays a much larger part in the story although she is there for a short period in the film.

"Preity plays Hasina Jagmagiya. It is a character which goes into the song Happening. Her character is very integral to the story as she is the one who leads to the climax," adds Soni.

Preity's dance number, Happening, has also been compared to the Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan's Kajra Re from the movie Bunty aur Babli. Preity is also said to be planning to make a comeback in the endorsement world after Diwali with a bang.

Buzz is that with her revamped image, an international designer house has approached her to endorse its brand which soon will be launched in India. This advertisement, claim sources, will boost Preity's flagging career.

Aarushi murder: CBI detains two for questioning

New Delhi, Sep 16: Just days after the Delhi Police recovered Aarushi Talwar's phone and handed it over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), two people have been detained in connection with the murder of teenage girl.

Reports say that the CBI has detained a man identified to be Rambhool and his sister Kusum for questioning. Although the two have been detained, it is not clear if they have been arrested, said sources.

CBI refused to comment on the development.

The Delhi Police recovered Aarushi's black Nokia N97 on Saturday, Sep 12 from a town in UP and handed it over to the CBI which is probing the double murder of the girl and the family's domestic help that took place in May 2008.

Discovery Travel and Living has made a documentary on SRK naming – Living with the superstar. The documentary traces four personalities of SRK, businessman,global hit,doting father and husband and finally the Badshah of Bollywood.

An insider reveals, “We started shooting for the documentary in Mumbai when he was shooting the music video for Kolkata Knight Riders. From there we went to South Africa. That was a revelation as SRK’s team was not playing really well.”

The unit then followed SRK to San Francisco, where he was shooting for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan. Intimate details of the actor have been shot. We were told, “SRK is a star without any superstar tantrums. He traveled in one car with his man Friday and security officer. A very neat and tidy person, SRK’s needs are scarce. He drinks at least 20 small cups of cold coffee with many many cigarettes. On the set, the unit followed him as he gave his shots or when he chatted with Karan in between takes.”

The final leg of the documentary was shot in London, which has captured SRK with his family. From teaching his daughter Suhana to cycle to playing games with his son Aryan at Hyde Park… from cycling in the middle of the night to lunches at cafes with wife Gauri and his children, this footage has been regarded as “unseen and priceless.”

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly added another feather to his cap when he was awarded an honorary fellowship by the University of Central Lancashire.

Ganguly, who retired from international cricket late last year after playing 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, was conferred the fellowship for his "unparalleled determination coupled with grit and talent".

"It is a huge honour. When I came to know about this a few months ago, I felt proud and I'm happy to be here," Ganguly said after personally receiving the fellowship from Dharma Kovvuri, acting dean of UCLAN management faculty, on Wednesday at Lancashire.

"I have a long-term association with Lancashire -- I had my first One-day International at Old Trafford 13 years ago and had a stint with Lancashire County Cricket Club," the 37-year-old cricketer was quoted as saying in the 'Lancashire Evening Post'.

"The best thing I remember about Lancashire was in April 2000 when I turned up at 10 degree temperature. I was standing in the slips and couldn't take my hands out of my pockets as it was so cold. Luckily, Michael Atherton asked me to go at mid-on where I put some hand warmers in my pockets and kept myself warm," he added.

Ganguly said he would set up his own institution for children from pre-school to college age in Kolkata and build links with UCLan.

Indian Hacks Australian Air Force site: Report

An Indian techie has allegedly hacked the Royal Australian Air Force website and posted a message asking Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's government to take all steps to stop racist attacks against Indian students.

Australia's Department of Defence has said the website was hacked between Monday and Tuesday but did not elaborate on the issue, The Age newspaper reported on Thursday.

Citing its sources, the paper said the message read, "This site has been hacked by Atul Dwivedi. This is a warning message to the Australian government. Immediately take all measures to stop racist attacks against Indian students in Australia or else I will pawn all your cyber properties like this one."

The department kept the entire RAAF website offline and replaced it with a page explaining that there had been "technical difficulties". The site has now been restored.

A Defence spokeswoman said the RAAF website was not used to conduct official air force business and no sensitive information had been stolen.

The internal "intranet" systems were secure and had not been compromised.

Twenty Indian students have been attacked in Australia since last month. Australia hosts over 5 lakh international students, including 97,000 Indians.

"No sensitive information was compromised as the air force internet website is hosted on an external server and, as such, does not hold any sensitive information," the spokeswoman said, adding "Further, the server is not connected to any operational Defence systems."

Defence Security Authority is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The department did not comment on the technical aspects or what action would be taken against the hacker, due to the "active investigation".

No, I’m not annoyed by these never ending references to Kareena. When people see the film I know they’ll come out talking about me and my performance. Imtiaz Ali was very sure he wanted only me in the film. ”

Deepika for the first time lets out a secret. “Imtiaz was so sure he wanted me for the part he had offered me Love Aaj Kal even before my first film Om Shanti Om was released. It is believed that it was Pooja Batra who helped Kambakkht Ishq filmmaker Sabbir Khan to get in touch with Hollywood casting agents. That's how the casting of international actors like Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards came about.

It was surprising to see Pooja Batra mingling with Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle Khanna at Kambakkht Ishq’s success party.

It can be recalled that prior to this, Akshay Kumar also patched up with his other ex-girlfriend Shilpa Shetty. The duo came face to face during Fear Factor's promotion on an episode of Big Boss which was anchored by Shilpa Shetty.

Post that Shilpa Shetty expressed her desire to cast him for a film produced by her production house. Reacting to it he said he wouldn't mind working with Shilpa Shetty again provided a good script came their way.

Shahid Kapur has inherited his dad`s Ability of acting: Amol Gupte

Shahid Kapur apparently took inspiration from his illustrious dad Pankaj Kapur to play the role of morally-incompatible twins in forthcoming thriller `Kaminey`. And his co-star Amol Gupte feels the young actor has indeed inherited his father`s acting skills.

"When Shahid played Guddu, he had to assume Guddu`s stammer. He completely internalised all of the character`s traits, including the stammer so that there`s nothing caricatural about the character," Gupte, who plays a villain in the film by Vishal Bharadwaj, told reporters.

"He stayed on the set throughout, kept absorbing the ambience, the sweaty milieu in which Guddu and Charlie (the other character) had to function in their own separate ways. I know Pankaj works the same way. And I truly believe Shahid has inherited Pankaj`s ability and style of performing without seeming to act. It is definitely in his DNA," he added.

Gupte, who is better known for scripting Aamir Khan`s directorial debut "Taare Zameen Par", says his young co-star surprised him with his excellent performance.

"When you`re facing the camera with a co-star you become compatriots in the canvas of characterization. On many occasions I was startled by Shahid`s passion for excellence. I saw the same quality in Aamir.

"It`s an adrenaline-charged performance. On many occasions as we performed together I`d forget how young Shahid is. This level of passion in a performance comes to an actor after decades, not after three-four years of acting," he said.

Gupte is so impressed with Shahid, who made his debut in 2003 with "Ishq Vishk", that he now intends to cast him in his directorial venture.

He rates Shahid`s acting in "Kaminey" as a benchmark for actors essaying double roles.

"I don`t think a double role has been done like this before. Shahid has entered Guddu and Charlie`s world. Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah) and Pankaj apart, I know very few actors who could`ve done what he has. Shahid should be up for two best actor nominations in `Kaminey`," Gupte said.

Though this is Shahid`s first film with Bharadwaj, audiences still remember his father Pankaj for his stellar performance in the talented director`s "Maqbool". He also wowed audiences in his "The Blue Umbrella" and "Blood Brothers", a short-film on AIDS.

John Abraham is off the crutches but explains that the doctor has advised him not to walk too much for the next two weeks if he wishes to be back on his toes. The actor got a fracture while shooting for one of his movies, was on crutches while promoting another and now is busy providing shelter to the homeless.

In a candid chat with Renuka Vyavahare , John Abraham tells all about how humanity begins at home.

It’s not for nothing that John Abraham, the actor has been tagged as the ‘Habitat Hero’. “As a celebrity I am provided with a media platform and there is no harm in using your face for a social cause. Stardom comes with responsibility. All celebs lead a busy life, so do I, and so do the people who may not be famous but still strive hard to better others’ lives. If you mean good, you should do good,” said John.

For the actor, it all began at home. His mother Phiroza Irani has lent a hand and her heart to children suffering from cancer and the homeless, while Daddy Abraham, an architect, has done his bit by building earthquake proof and tsunami proof houses in Latur and Tsunami affected areas. “Upbringing is important and you need that inspiration at home. My parents are the reason why I support social causes... be it providing shelter, protecting animals or spreading health awareness. I recently provided homes to 30 homeless elephants...”

It was when John met former US President, Jimmy Carter that he was struck with the humanitarian syndrome. “I was stunned when I saw an 80 plus year old former President getting out in the hot sun in Lonavala and building houses. When I did it myself I realized how rewarding and satisfying it was. I built a house for an old lady; it made me happy. It’s different to sit in a board room meeting and talk causes and to actually go out there and do something.”

It’s no wonder then that good looking John Abraham, who doesn’t mind selling his favourite helmets and jackets to raise funds for causes, gets touted as a ‘youth icon’. “I am obsessively in love with my bikes but I don’t mind selling those, too, if that can bring happiness in people’s life. I want to get into the bloodstream of the youth as they are the driving force, they are my biggest connect and that is the audience I need to target to spread humanity.”

Hrithik Roshan Prepares for role in wheelchair

As preparation for his role of a paraplegic in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzarish, the method actor has been moving around in a wheelchair at home. This is proving to be of amusement for his tots Hrehaan and Hridhaan. A source close to Hrithik reveals, "As he wants to appear natural on screen, he has taken it up as a challenge to get his nuances for the character right."

Right moves
In the movie, the upper half of his body is paralysed. Hrithik is not only working on acquiring the right moves on the wheelchair, but also giving attention to the way a paraplegic talks, looks and reacts. He has also been reading books to understand the psyche of paraplegics."

The source continues, "But his learning sessions at home are providing much mirth to his sons. They cart him around the house or insist on sitting on his lap while he wheels himself around."

Earlier too, for his role of a mentally challenged character in Koi... Mil Gaya, Hrithik had also done plenty of research to mould himself into the character.

It is learnt that Bhansali has also given him a list of guidelines to be followed.

Priyanka Chopra's brother Siddharth is just back from Switzerland after six months, where he is studying for a Hospitality Association Diploma. He now has to undergo another six months of internship.Due to recession, there are not too many job opportunities available in the hotel industry, as a result, the Chopra boy plans to learn a foreign language while on the look out for a job at a hotel in the city.

Learning experience
He says, "The course is divided into six semesters, out of which three are for internships. I could have done it at any place but am keen to do my internship in Mumbai." The overseas stay has been a learning experience in being independent for the baby of the family.

He has been trained in the art of hosting lavish lunches, elegant dinners, setting the table, serving wines plus all the minute details that are included in a la carte dining When asked if he has been sharing his knowledge with his actress sister? He says, "Yes, ever since I am back I have become particular about every detail on the dining table. My sister is a perfectionist and she loves it too. I suggest how to lay the table in the professional way."

When asked if he had been trying his hand at cooking, he confirms, "Yes, it is in my genes. Both my dad and I are good cooks. It is something I enjoy doing. My entire family are big foodies, so once in a while I cook and serve them."

The usually-unflappable cricketer snaps and orders not to question him on the sensitive issue

Cricket legend Anil Kumble's battle for the custody of his stepdaughter took an epic turn with BJP strategist and former law minister Arun Jaitley stepping in as his wife's advocate.

Documents in possession with MiD DAY reveal that Jaitley is arguing for Kumble's wife Chetana, who has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against her former husband's demand for full custody of their daughter Aaruni (15). Chetana was earlier married to Kumar V Jahgirdar, and Aaruni is their daughter, and now lives with the Kumbles.A epic battle is on the cards, with Prashant Bhushan, son of another law minister (Shanti Bhushan), arguing Jahgirdar's brief. Shanti Bhushan's legal expertise cost prime minister Indira Gandhi her government after her election as MP was disqualified in 1975. The Supreme Court heard the child custody case yesterday and adjourned it for two weeks.

"Jaitley, who has masterminded several victories for the BJP, is now fighting for Chetana," said a source close to her former husband. Jaitley leads a team of five eminent advocates in this case, while his rival lawyer has a team with similar strength. Jahgirdar and Chetana were not available for comment. But the normally unflappable Kumble was cold when MiD DAY called. "Don't ask me about all this," he snapped. "Don't call in this regard."

Jahgirdar's counsel, Bhushan, is optimistic about his prospects. "I'm hopeful of winning the case," Bhushan told MiD DAY. He laughed away the suggestion that the case was more between two former law ministers than between Chetana and Jahgirdar.

"We have argued many cases in the past. It doesn't have much to do with former union law ministers," he said. Jaitley was not available for comment.
